• Lead and galvanized pipes – If you have an older home, then you probably have lead or galvanized water pipes. Unfortunately, galvanized pipes can lead to rusting and discolored water. You’ll be able to even taste it in the water. Lead and galvanized pipes have a typical lifespan of 50-75 years. However, they are dangerous because of their ability to rust and it’s highly recommended they be replaced with newer pipes.
• Copper pipes – The most common pipes you’ll find in homes nowadays are copper pipes. It typically does not need to be replaced as long as it has been maintained. Copper pipes can lead to hard water though. In cities, you may have hard water because of minerals found in the water. The minerals and metals contained in hard water can lead to blockages and even a burst pipe.
• Quest pipes – Quest, or polybutylene, pipes are plastic pipes that were commonly used in construction and remodeling projects from the 1970s into the ’90s. They are prone to fracturing and can even burst under high pressure. If your home has a Quest water line, it should ideally be replaced with higher quality, new materials.
